ABOUT BRIAN
Brian is an energetic and versatile blues singer, songwriter and guitarist. Hailing from the Pacific NW, he is a well- known and popular member of the blues scene there. Brian has a talent and drive for songwriting and performing his original music.
Some of Brian’s blues are thoughtful such as “The News About Billy” which chronicles the deline of a friendship or “We’ll Love On” which expresses hope for a peaceful future. Others are ironic or humorous like “Atomic Bomb” about a love affair with explosive possibilities or “Another Blues Singer” in which a fellow is headed towards an unintended engagement with the blues unless he takes care of business at home.
At the time Brian was breaking into the blues scene, it was centered around a cluster of bars on First Avenue in downtown Seattle. Place Pigalle, the Hideout, The Boulder were funky bars where patrons danced and drank far into the night; venues where Brian followed his life-long pursuit of the blues. His “Destination First Avenue” captures the feeling of a night of blues in one of these downtown establishments. Building on the framework of the classics, his blues are drawn from his own observations and experiences. His repertoire also includes songs from a wide variety of bluesmen. Influences include Mance Lipscomb, Albert Collins and Hill Country players like R.L. Burnside.
He has a skillful finger picked guitar style using a thumb pick and bare fingers - a hybrid style derived from older acoustic and modern electric styles that produces his signature sound. Brian appreciates the challenge of the solo performer who must create all his sounds by himself to attract an audience that values the intimacy of the lone musician – a man and his guitar.
As well as local venues, he has played many events across the region including the Kitsap Blues Festival, Portland Blues Festival, Issaquah Gas Station Blues Series, Yakima Blues Festival, Ellensburg Jazz in the Valley, Highway 99 Blues Club and Sun Banks Blues Festival.
Brian has won multiple awards from the Washington Blues Society for Best Acoustic Guitar and in 2019 “BUTLER BLUES” won Best Blues album. Brian has an enthusiasm for connecting with an audience and sharing the captivating sound of the blues.
